50 Reasons to Run, Day 9: Veronicah
Veronicah Mumbi
1976 – 2012
Guest at Living Room: February 23 – March 24, 2012
On the Thursday afternoon that Veronicah came to the Living Room, a two-hour car ride provided an opportunity to reflect upon the value and impact of Living Room, as well as a very clear reminder of what would be required to do this work. The answer is most simply to love.
Veronicah was a 35 year-old mother of three boys. Her body had been cruelly overtaken by cancer and disease, and she was in need of a place to find rest. A canister of oxygen, with tubes going in all directions filled the back seat, barely telling the severity of her disease. However, in the midst of being hot and uncomfortable, there was something very sacred in those moments: Living Room was being given the opportunity to love and care for a woman whose beauty would never grace the cover of a magazine. Though her strength was limited and her words few, a spirit of gratitude overflowed from her. Through whispers she acknowledged that Kimbilio must be people of God and that she was thankful there was a place that would provide a home for someone like her.
For one month, the Living Room served as a refuge for Veronicah—physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
Veronicah is worth running for
