50 Reasons to Run, Day 4: Edwin
Edwin Mwale
2005 – 2012
Guest at Living Room: December 20, 2011 – April 3, 2012
In his six years of life, Edwin endured the terrible suffering that accompanies HIV and AIDS, an additional virus which blinded his young eyes, and other challenges too numerous to recount. When he arrived at the Living Room, he was very weak and unable to speak. In caring for this little boy, providing him with the anti-retroviral medication he vitally needed, he gained weight, increased in strength, and learned to navigate around the hospice with his new walking stick.
In addition to Edwin finding his voice and learning to speak, he began to display a love for music. He would dance, whistle, play his harmonica, and sing. He would, however, only sing one song: “Nani kama mimi?”, which in English translates to, “Who is like me?” The real lyrics of this popularly sung worship song in Kenya, in reference to God, say, “Who is like You?” For a period of time, the Living Room staff tried to correct the little musician, but Edwin persisted in singing, “Who is like me?” There was no doubt that Edwin was created in the image of God, and like the words of Psalm 139 say, Edwin was fearfully and wonderfully made. It had been a pure joy to care for this little boy.
One April afternoon in 2012, without warning, Edwin grew terribly sick and died within only a few hours. It was a day filled with much heartache and grief. In many ways, Edwin’s life helped to shape the Living Room team by leading them to the deeper things that touch the heart of God, and for that, they felt privileged and remain incredibly grateful to have known and cared for Edwin.
Edwin is worth running for
