50 Reasons to Run, Day 3: Riziki
Riziki Nafula Chitechi
1990 – 2013
Guest at Living Room: May 3 – June 5, 2013
On June 5th, the Living Room family said good-bye to a beautiful mother who, like so many of our guests, had also become our friend. A young wife and new mother, Riziki at 22 years of age, was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. During the very difficult delivery of her first and only child, the doctors had to rush her for an emergency C-section, where they discovered that cancer was present throughout. Because of the advanced stage of her cancer, palliative care was the only option. Riziki remained in the government hospital for several months after giving birth until Juli Boit, Founder and International Director of Living Room International, met her one Tuesday as she did rounds with the palliative care team in the hospital. After several weeks of continuing to advocate for Riziki to be transferred to Kimbilio Hospice, she finally arrived on May 3rd. Though Riziki’s home was more than 45 miles away, her loving and devoted husband frequently visited her, even bringing their six month-old daughter with him at times. As painful as her loss was, we were so grateful that Living Room was a place of refuge and hope for Riziki’s weary soul.
Riziki is worth running for
