50 Reasons to Run, Day 38: Mercy
Mercy Chepchumba
Born: 2006
Guest at Living Room: May 17, 2011 – May 30, 2012
Five year-old Mercy Chepchumba came to Kimbilio Hospice in May of 2011 because she was malnourished, sickly, and in need of a place of refuge. Cerebral palsy had left her disabled and completely dependent upon others for even the most basic of needs. The weight of this was especially felt by Mercy’s mother. Yet Mercy came to life with the physical therapy she was receiving at Living Room, and she quickly gained head and neck strength. In caring for Mercy, we were also able to care for Mercy’s mother – not only in providing her with a respite; we were also able to help educate her of ways that she could continue to assist in Mercy’s development and exercises that would strengthen her daughter’s muscles. In a culture that too often regards the disabled as burdens on society or as altogether useless, the Living Room team, by loving and caring for this hidden treasure, was able to demonstrate the value in this precious life that up until this point, only God and Mercy’s mother had seen and cherished.
Mercy is worth running for
