50 Reasons to Run, Day 34: Sulemain
Sulemain Musa Mutali
Born: 1986
Guest at Living Room: March 1 – June 26, 2013
HIV-positive and suffering from meningitis that had caused blindness in his eyes, twenty-six year-old Sulemain was referred to Living Room from a government hospital in nearby town, Eldoret, where he had spent several months. Due to overcrowding and understaffing in the hospital, Sulemain could not be moved properly or as often as was needed and consequently developed contractures, rendering him unable to walk. Upon arriving to Kimbilio Hospice, Sulemain immediately began working with our physical therapist, Geoffrey, who taught him to stretch and exercise his atrophied leg muscles. In the four months that Sulemain was with us, he determinedly worked to learn to walk again with the assistance of crutches, and much to his surprise and delight, with the proper medication, he also regained his sight. Outgoing and very friendly, with a contagious smile, he eagerly welcomed visitors, guests, and staff alike to the Living Room. He often joked that he would like to be referred to as “King Sulemain.”
When seen recently in his home town walking with only one crutch by Living Room staff and board members David and Allison Tarus, Sulemain declared to his friends, “These are the people that help… these are the people that helped me!”
Sulemain is worth running for
