50 Reasons to Run, Day 12: Chelimo
Purity Chelimo
Born: 2008
Guest at Living Room: November 23, 2011 – March 1, 2012
At two-and-a-half years of age, Chelimo arrived to the Living Room weighing a mere eight pounds. HIV positive and severely malnourished, Chelimo was near death. Through much love, intensive care and feeding, the Living Room team witnessed Chelimo come back to life.
After a little over three months of care, much energy and joy radiated from Chelimo. She had learned to walk and speak, and her weight had increased dramatically. When the social worker from a nearby HIV treatment center returned to pick up Chelimo, in disbelief, she said, “This isn’t the child I brought.” Because the transformation in Chelimo was so remarkable, it took time and convincing for her to accept that this could possibly be the same child. On-going care and follow-up made it possible for Chelimo to return to her home and be reunited with her family.
